Project: Zombie

This topic will explore creating some zombie mapping objects, zombie crowds, etc for all types of maps.

Here are some samples of a biker zombie. The first with a normal skin tone, the other two with discolored tones.

Great Stuff Steel! Can you make some with a bald head or hair missing? Or even flesh missing on the scalp. LOL - this is fun! I can't wait to start using some of this in the Halloween spirit!
Great stuff!

Not sure where you uploaded your images or how you got them in here without putting them into the main gallery but I am going to do it the old fashion way. Stay tuned!

I modified yours a bit to take away the head cover. I will do better with more time.

These are great Steel! How are you putting these images up here? Oh, I bet you are just putting them into a folder for now and when you get enough, you will zip them together and then upload them into the gallery as one. Correct? We don't actually have the ability to do what you are doing - right?

You can use the image Assist option. it's a bit cumbersome, and doesn't work the way I really want it to, but it's there.

If you're using the WYSIWYG editor you should see a camera icon on the far right of the top toolbar. Click that and you can add images to posts. Though I usually just use that to get the file in, then you can use the path http://rpgmapshare.com/files/images/filename.png to insert the image.

So I'm guessing this style of zombieis good? I know you've said they're great, Dorpond, but no one else is offering feedback. I was posting them here instead of in the gallery just for that purpose. Didn't want to be distributing them if they weren't what people wanted.

I love the Zombies Steel. The only thing I would suggest and this probably goes with every creature/person render is that different poses are probably more effective than different clothes with the same pose. When we fill a bar with people, what makes them all look different is their poses. The same goes with zombies; I would rather see arms changes, heads turned and stuff like that so that the player looks at the maps and says "wow, that looks real!"

I love the zombies though - I have been using them in that Halloween campaign that I am making. even more variety will be e welcome! Thanks again for all your hard work Steel!

What I intend to do is one figure with one set of clothes and one pose, using different clothing and skin textures, then change the pose, and do it all again, change the pose, etc. Then use some different clothing and go through the same process. And change the figure slightly, fatter, skinnier, etc. so while at first it may seem like a lot of repitition the bigger picture won't seem that way at all.

I like the zombies, too. I just haven't been browsing the posts as often as I used to before the site got a facelift.

ANy reason for that Heruca? Are there any comments about this site that you want to throw out there? Is it too hard to navigate?

Just curious.

Steel, those zombies you showed me earlier today were unreal.. er uh.. Undead.. :)
When do you think you will upload them? I'd like to have the Halloween campaign ready for others to download by Sunday. Think you will upload them by then? They are the last thing I need to drop down so no real big hurry. :)
Great job!!!

Those were all "modern" zombies, though they could be used for fantasy in a pinch.

I will try to get them up by saturday, if I haven't gotten enough for what I feel is a complete set, I'll just email them to you or something.

Will the new zombies that Dorpond used in his zombie campaign for MapTools be posted before Halloween?

I was hoping to add more to the collection before posting them. If I don't get the time, I'll puy them up before halloween.

Yeah, I want to do things like that. Making them "believable" is part of the problem for me, not being a whiz in Photoshop or anything.

Sorry I didn't have a chance to really ramp up the zombies thing. I do  have a few to zip up so you all have something for tonight. I'll do that as soon as I get home, in a couple hours.

I don't have anything currently like that. But I could certainly whip some up, armed with the obligatory baseball bats, tire irons, shotguns, and chainsaws.

I have a bunch more planned, for that guy too. Just wanted to get something up there to keep interest going. Once I'm "done" with that character I'll zip him up and make that available. Didn't want to keep you guys waiting for a Zip, or have to update it later.

Sure I can. What rendered dimensions would you be looking for? Something like this?

Everything is separate. The base person is one object, the hair is a separate object, the shirt, pants, machete, etc, all separate. I have a wider variety of female clothing than male, it just happens that way. Some clothing items come with multiple textures which can be applied. In most cases I can change colors (not that it always looks good). And there are a lot of third party clothing textures out there. The body figures also have textures which can be applied, for any enthicity, along with facial and body morphs (fat, skinny, young, old, asian, african, etc...).

Here's the biker dude from the front. Same basic figure as the guy in the Tshirt, just different clothing, hair (the bandana is basically a hair prop), body texture, etc.

Steel Rat

It absolutely is.

However, with the specific lighting and shadows the normal figures don't really fit into the theme well, since they have no shadows. It's one of those catch-22 situations. Do you make a great-looking map only to have no figures fit into it well? Or compromise your map?

I think mood can be created without perspective lighting and shadows, I've seen it before. It's not easy to be sure. But to me the mood is ruined if the figures don't match.

I don't have a really strong preferance, but I'd lean towards realistic without any special lighting or shadow effects "hardcoded" into the map. Using online tools I can add lighting effects (granted, not TRUE lighting effects which will cause shadows and such) and overlays to enhance mood if needed. So far I haven't had that much of a need.

I didn't mean to take away from Hex's maps by any means, they look VERY cool, I was actually taking away from my objects not fitting in. But as was pointed out, it would be impractical to make objects which map the lighting effects of a specific map.

I think someday the online tools will be good enough to actually light objects based on specific light sources, much as 3d Rendering tools do now. Or even pseudo lighting effects such as in Photoshop or something (adjusting gamma on a gradient or some such, based on an objects dimensions and the properties of the light source.) And as a logical extension of that to make dynamic shadows as well, even if the shadows are just amorphous shapes.
