I played with it a bit and it is pretty easy to quickly throw together a some basic 3D scenes.
If you check out the library there are quite a few simple examples of people putting together castles and other fortifications. Some are pretty nice.
Don't know that I have the time to devote to getting good enough with it to produce useful images though.

I've been using SketchUp for years, it's terrific. Although I agree on the rendering being not very powerful. Personally, I've used Bryce 5, Blender, Indigo Renderer and Kerkythea to turn models into more eye-pleasing images.
I would grade ease-of-use in this order, starting with the (imo) poorest handling: Blender, Bryce, Indigo Renderer, Kerkythea
Kerkythea's quality of images seemed to me pretty close to Blender, while Indigo Renderer yielded the best results. While Bryce was much better than SketchUp's built in engine, it was still very basic (or I lacked skill to produce better images).
See my deviantArt profile (AngelusN) for images rendered with Kerkythea and Indigo Renderer
